Womanwork was inspired by two poems by Maya Angelou. The first movement, Soliloquy, was inspired by the poem, "To a Suitor." The second movement, Strife, was inspired by the poem, "Woman Work." My favorite line from either poems comes in the middle of Woman Work: "Shine on me, sunshine/Rain on me, Rain/Fall gently dew drops/And cool my brow again." It is meant to be the sound of a slave resigned to her struggle. I hope I have done both of these poems justice, just as they have inspired me so greatly.
