Sunset is a slow, expressive single-movement work for string
quartet with harmonies reminiscent of Aaron Copland. I
composed it for my wife Arlene before we married, while I
attended graduate school.
Rhythmically, the most challenging aspect of the music is a
four-against-three polyrhythm that comes up from time to
time. There are a few brief metric shifts, but for the most
part the piece is in triple meter.
