In case you don't know the history, the Carnival of the
Animals was written in 1882 by French composer Camille Saint-
Sa?ns for a friend's birthday party. This arrangement
includes all 14 movements:
- Introduction and Lion's Royal March
- Hens and Roosters
- Hemiones (Wild Jackasses)
- Tortoises
- The Elephant
- Kangaroos
- Aquarium
- Persons with Long Ears
- The Cuckoo in the Heart of the Forest
- The Aviary
- Pianists
- Fossils
- The Swan
- Finale
A few characteristics specific to this particular arrangement are probably worth
mentioning here. Hemiones is usually performed by two pianos playing
an octave apart throughout. This arrangement, however, also includes
an optional cello melody not written in the original work. The Aquarium
involves some interesting effects with harmonics that were not part
of the original, and The Swan -- the most famous animal in the Carnival
-- has condensed the two-piano accompaniment into one without removing
the "ripples" in the water. |
